Spain Park drops Battle for the Ball

Two individual Spain Park High School wrestlers defeated their Hoover opponents, but it wasn’t enough as the Jaguars fell to the Bucs 63-15 in the Battle for the Ball Jan. 18.

Geoffrey Bostany of Spain Park earned a 5-0 decision over Hoover’s Parker Grissom in the 135-pound match. Spain Park’s Martin Stone pinned Sam Snell of Hoover in 35 seconds in the 145-pound match.

The wins by Bostany and Stone were the Jaguars’ only victories on the mat in the annual Battle for the Ball between the two rival schools. Tommy Bostany, Spain Park’s 112-pounder, won by forfeit.

The wrestling match between Spain Park and Hoover has been named the “Battle for the Ball” because the winner gets a bowling ball, which is the traveling trophy. Bowling was one of the hobbies and passions of coach Duke Chimento, who was the head wrestling coach at Berry High School before Hoover or Spain Park existed. Chimento participated in the opening ceremonies and conducted the coin toss.
