Montevallo women fall at Clayton State
The University of Montevallo women’s basketball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end with a 72-56 loss on the road Jan. 20 at No. 19 Clayton State University.
The Lady Falcons (10-6, 3-3 in Peach Belt Conference) were led by junior Shan Jones, who had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Alex Sanabria also scored 15 points to support the Lady Falcons’ effort.
Senior Alicia Lewis had nine points and a team-high seven assists.
Montevallo shot a season-low 27.4 percent from the floor, hitting just 20-of-73 shots.
The Lady Falcons opened up the game with a 16-8 run over the opening six minutes, but the Lakers responded with a 33-6 run over the final 14 minutes of the half to take a 41-22 lead into halftime.
The second half began much like the first, with the Falcons going on a 14-5 run over the first four minutes to cut the CSU lead to just 10 points. Once again, the Lakers responded with a 17-5 run over the next seven minutes to reopen a 22-point lead. The Lady Falcons were able to battle back and trim that lead to just 16 points as time expired.
Montevallo will look to rebound from the loss with a home game Saturday, Jan. 23 at 1:30 p.m. as the Lady Falcons take on Georgia College and State University. The Bobcats are 11-4 on the season and 4-1 in Peach Belt Conference play.
