Ben McKinney scored 20 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to help Vincent wrap up a share of the Class 2A, Area 9 regular season title with an 83-42 win Jan. 21 on the road at Thorsby.

The Yellow Jackets improved to 15-7 overall and finished 5-1 in Class 2A, Area 9 play, which ties them with Shades Mountain Christian for the top spot in the area. A coin toss Jan. 27 will determine the host of the Area 9 tournament Feb. 5-8.

Vincent left no doubt about the outcome of the game after outscoring Thorsby 29-6 in the first quarter.

“We just wanted to come out and play hard,” said Vincent coach John Hadder. “We have been preaching consistency, so I was happy with the effort — especially early.”

Keyon Wallace finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Devanta Williams added 16 points and seven rebounds. Anterio Rogers chipped in 10 points and Austin Davis finished with 10 rebounds.

Hadder said the Yellow Jackets will be prepared for the Area 9 tournament should they host it or play at Shades Mountain.

“Obviously we would like to host and play at home, but ultimately it doesn’t matter where we play,” Hadder said. “You still have to line up, execute, and play hard regardless of what floor you are on. Our focus is more on improving ourselves, getting better at what we do. I think our guys realize that.”
