Shelby County tops Briarwood in area tournament action
The Shelby County High School boys’ basketball team advanced to the championship game of the Class 5A, Area 8 tournament with a 67-61 win over Briarwood Christian at John Carroll Catholic High School.
Jordan Simon led the Wildcats (19-5) with 25 points. Ty Lollar added 20 points. Kevin McNorton chipped in 13 points.
Justin Bice led Briarwood (16-13) with 20 points.
Shelby County will meet the host Cavs in the Area 8 championship game Feb. 8 at 7 p.m.

Brandon Horton led the Hornets (11-18) with 14 points. Jake Ganus added 10 points.
Class 4A, Area 7
Calera 87, Jemison 59
Deondre Haynes led the host Eagles (14-14) with 22 points in the Class 4A, Area 7 semifinals. Blayne Sumrall added 18 points and Ronnie Clark chipped in 16 points.
Calera will meet Holt in the Area 7 championship game Feb. 8 at 7 p.m.
Class 2A, Area 9
Vincent 70, Fultondale 44
Keyon Wallace led the Yellow Jackets (20-7) with 28 points and 16 rebounds in the semifinals of the Class 2A, Area 9 tournament at Shades Mountain Christian School.
Ben McKinney added 12 points and 14 rebounds. Devanta Williams chipped in 11 points.
Vincent will face host Shades Mountain in the Area 9 championship game Feb. 8 at 7 p.m.

Jake Doggett led the Knights (7-20) with 12 points in the semifinals of the Class 1A, Area 9 tournament at Holy Family Catholic School in Birmingham.
