A customer at the Kangaroo Express on Cahaba Valley Road had his vehicle taken from him by force while at a gas pump Feb. 12, said the Pelham Police Department through a press release.

At 7:37 a.m., Pelham Police responded to the call at the gas station. The victim of the robbery was injured during the theft after being dragged a short distance and was treated by Pelham Fire Paramedics and transported to an area hospital

Police later arrested a suspect after spotting the stolen vehicle near the intersection of Caldwell Mill Road and Cahaba Valley Road.

Police said the suspect drove away in the victim’s red 2000 Ford F-250 4×2 dually with a matching red camper shell.

Police received a tip of the suspect traveling down Cahaba Valley Road, and he was stopped near the intersection of Caldwell Mill Road at 12:40 p.m. by Pelham Police with an assist by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.

Paul Edward Smith, 22, was arrested and charged with first-degree theft and third-degree assault. He is being held in the Shelby County Jail on $31,000 bond.

Police said another stolen vehicle was recovered at the scene, apparently taken earlier today in Tuscaloosa and abandoned at the station by the suspect.
