A memorial service Tommy Shelton, formerly of Shelby, is Sunday at the Ramada Plaza Beach Resort in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., from 1 to 3 p.m.

Prior to the service, at Shelton’s request, at 10:30 a.m. his ashes will be spread at Miracle Strip Aviation Inc., an airport from which he flew, located at 1001 Airport Road, Destin, Fla.

Shelton, a long-time resident of Shelby County and former pastor of the River of Life Church here, was killed last week when the plan he was piloting crashing near Forest City, Iowa.

The memorial service will be a celebration of Shelton’s life, organizers said. The Ramada Plaza Beach Resort, located at 1500 Miracle Strip Parkway, SE, Fort Walton Beach, is offering discounted room rates of $50 plus tax per night for those staying to honor Shelton. Shelton is survived by his wife, Gail; children Michelle Shelton, Tommy Shelton Jr. and Susan Shelton; and grandchildren Tant Shelton, Navie Shelton, Trace Shelton and Josie Shelton.

Shelton was a pastor in Clanton and Shelby for more than 30 years before retiring and moving to Destin. He had been a pilot since he was 15 years old, family members said.
