Half inch of snow expected March 2

Shelby County could see as much as a half-inch of snow March 2.

A storm system is expected to move into the area from the Gulf of Mexico late March 1, and likely will bring heavy rainfall to Central Alabama, according to the National Weather Service’s Calera office.

The rain is expected to turn into snow north of Montevallo throughout the day March 2, and could accumulate to as much as a half-inch.

“If it was a lot colder, this would be a classic scenario for a significant snow storm over Alabama,” read a National Weather Service press release, which placed the county under a winter weather advisory.

“However, temperatures are relatively warm right out ahead of the storm, and this lowers the probability of significant snow amounts,” the release read.

Snowfall amounts could reach as much as two inches in eastern Alabama, and the National Weather Service said snowfall totals could vary depending on the storm front’s trajectory and intensity.

As of March 1, Shelby County Schools had not announced any March 2 school closings.
