Pelham boys knock off defending state soccer champions

The Pelham High School boys’ soccer team kocked off defending Class 6A champion Fairhope 2-1 in a game at Thompson High School in soccer action April 17.

Gio Corona gave the Panthers (18-3-1) an early 1-0 lead with his goal, which was assisted by Saul Arceo.

Fairhope tied the game at 1-1 just before halftime.

Arceo deflected the ball off a Fairhope defender for the Panthers’ game-winning goal midway through the second half.

Pelham goalkeeper Hunter Payant recorded eight saves and Cameron Foss finished with one save.

The Panthers host John Carroll in their final regular season game April 20.

Pelham 2, Fairhope 2

Melissa Cooley and Ashley Gardner scored one goal each to lead the Panthers, who finished the regular season with a 19-2-1 record.

Gardner and Brittany Boles recorded an assist each.
