Shelby County athletes win section track and field titles

Two Shelby County athletes won Class 6A section track and field individual championships and two relay teams captured titles at a section meet April 23 at Mountain Brook. The meet will conclude on Monday after severe weather canceled the events scheduled for Saturday.
Pelham High School senior Dena O’Brien won the girls’ 1,600 meter run with her time of 5:01.47. Spain Park High School’s Myles Charley captured the boys’ triple jump title with his leap of 44 feet, 10.5 inches.
The Oak Mountain High School boys’ 3,200-meter relay team of Boyd Christenberry, Matt Cooper, John Gayle and Cory Jones captured a championship with a time of 8:04.26.
Section winners advanced to the Class 6A state meet April 30-May 1 in Gulf Shores.
Briarwood Christian relay team wins title at section meet
A Briarwood Christian School relay team captured a section championship at a Class 5A section meet at Tallassee.
The Lions’ 3,200-meter relay team of Mary Lant Cotten, Mary Catherine Ellard, Kimberly Galloway and Varina Hart won a section title with a time of 10:42.20.
The Briarwood relay team qualified for the Class 5A state meet April 30-May 1 in Gulf Shores.
