Reminiscing after 50 years

Fifty years is a long time, but those years just melted away as classmates of the 1960 class of Montevallo High School gathered for that special reunion.

Old friendships picked up where they left off so long ago.

In the 1960 class there were 46 students; 34 of those, along with their spouses, enjoyed an evening of reminiscing, renewing old acquaintances, dancing to oldies tunes and dining at Timberline Golf Club.

The April 10 celebration began with a tour of the high school.

Memories popped up as they strolled through the buildings: “This room is where I struggled with geometry.”

“Remember that basketball game here in the auditorium when we beat Calera so badly?”

“Everybody loved to come over here for Moon Thornton’s Ag. Class.” “This was where Miss DeMent stood over you until you typed a whole page without a single error.”

Following the tour, the group posed for a picture on the front steps of the school –– exactly as they had 50 years ago.

Someone jokingly declared there would surely be no difference in the two pictures.

On to Timberline for an informal program, dinner and dancing.

Class President Terry Daviston welcomed Emily Pendleton, their former teacher and yearbook sponsor, and thanked other members of the reunion committee: Betty M. Haynie, Fred Draper, Buster Pickett, Randy Woolley, Noralene J. Hand, Pattie M. Motes and Bill Herron.

Haynie announced they would participate in the 50th year alumni scholarship for a University of Montevallo bound MHS senior.

“It will be a way to give back to our school and all the teachers who helped mold our lives,” she said. “And it will be in memory of two of our classmates who met an untimely death –– Lena Hamm and Donnie Davis, and teacher Carolyn Edfeldt.”

Other class members attending the reunion were James Baine, Tony and Carole L. Birchfield, Forrest Brown, Ralph Burke, Joe Clark, Janice J. Cook, Myra C. Emfinger, Gary Goggins, Billy Herron, and Cissie O. Hulett, as well as Buddy Majors, Troy Mims, Hershel Pickett, Larry Joe Pickett, Larry Wayne Pickett, Keith Salter, Bobby Smitherman, Corky and Gisela M. Sneed, Tom Taff, Gary Thompson, Janice L. Tucker, Gale L. Walker and Doug Lemley.
