Local children will get a chance to take to the skies May 29 as part of the Experimental Aircraft Association’s Young Eagles program.

The Shelby County Airport will host the Young Eagles program from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Through the program, children 8-17 will be able to fly with local private pilots for free.

“Members of the Shelby County Chapter 825 EAA furnish their own airplanes, and even pay for the fuel,” Chapter Chairman Johnny Ward wrote in an e-mail.

Each flight will last about 20 minutes, and flights are scheduled to depart the airport terminal at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m.

Even though the flights are free, Ward urged participants to register for the event beforehand to minimize waiting time on the day of the event.

To schedule a flight time, e-mail Ward at johnnyward1@yahoo.com, or call him at 914-5984. Registration forms are available at the Shelby County Airport terminal and at the Shelby County Reporter office at 115 N. Main St. in Columbiana.
