Briarwood boys advance to state golf tournament
The Briarwood Christian School boys’ golf team finished second at an Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 5A sub-state tournament May 4 at TimberCreek Golf Course in Daphne to advance to the Class 5A state tournament.
The Lions collectively shot an 18-over par 306 to finish second, which put them 13 strokes behind tournament winner St. Paul’s and one shot ahead of third-place Cullman.
Chelsea’s Tyler Shope qualified for the state tournament as an individual after firing a 2-under par 70 to finish second overall at the sub-state tournament.
Matthew Belling and Trevor Hightower led Briarwood with a 3-over par 75 each. Connor Smith shot a 5-over par 77. Michael Belling carded a 7-over par 79 and John Hayden finished with an 8-over par 80.
The golfers advance to the Class 5A state tournament May 10-11 at the Robert Trent Jones’ Hampton Cove course in Huntsville.
