Cornerstone Christian School senior Chelsey Dunnaway hopes to lead the Chargers to an unprecedented fourth-consecutive Alabama Independent Schools Association Class 1A softball championship May 7-8 at Lagoon Park in Montgomery.

The Chargers (22-1) will open the Class 1A state tournament against Sparta Academy in the quarterfinals May 7 at 10 a.m.

Dunnaway, who surpassed the 1,000 strikeout mark in the Chargers’ win May 3 over Tuscaloosa Academy, said Cornerstone will approach the Class 1A tournament the same way the team has approached the last three.

“Going in, we’re just focused on one game at a time,” Dunnaway said.

Dunnaway, who features a 21-1 record in the circle and a microscopic earned run average, has 1,001 career strikeouts. Dunnaway said she never expected to reach the mark when she first put on a Cornerstone uniform as a freshman.

“Definitely not,” Dunnaway said. “To get 1,000 strikeouts is pretty awesome.”
