Chelsea finishes runner-up at region softball tournament

The Chelsea High School softball team finished runner-up May 8 at the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 5A South Central region tournament in Troy and qualified for the Class 5A state tournament.
Chelsea will play in the Class 5A state tournament May 13-14 at Lagoon Park in Montgomery.
The Hornets defeated Chilton County 3-0 and Sylacauga 4-0 before falling twice to Moody, 4-3 and 8-2, in the championship series.
Caitlyn Bice and Carley Toretta finished with hit each in the Hornets’ 8-2 loss to Moody. Morgan Pence took the loss after giving up four earned runs on five hits in four innings.
Toretta went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs in Chelsea’s 4-3 loss to Moody. Johnna Marie Barnes finished 1-for-3 with a double and scored a run.
Bice took the loss after giving up two earned runs on eight hits with four walks in a complete game.
Barnes and Riley Ganus had two hits each in the Hornets’ 3-0 win over Chilton County on the first day of the tournament. Barnes had a double and scored a run. Toretta went 1-for-3 and scored a run.
Tori Hollis picked up the win after striking out two in a seven-hit shutout in a complete game.
Hollis led Chelsea as she finished 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in the Hornets’ 4-0 win over Sylacauga.
Toretta finished 1-for-3 and drove in a run. Pence picked up the win in the circle after striking out nine batters in a one-hit shutout over four innings.
