Blenard Harrison Roper, (Granddaddy) After a long and fulfilled life, Granddaddy went home to his heavenly Father on Father’s Day, June 20, 2010.
Mr. Roper was born on March 26, 1921 to John and Cora Roper of Fourmile, AL. He was a graduate of Shelby County High School and shortly thereafter joined the U.S. Army and served his country during World War II from October 1942 to January 1946. He served under General Patton and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded a World War II Victory Medal, American Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars and a Good Conduct Medal. On February 6, 1943 he married the love of his life, Violet Carline Sims. For 67 years they fulfilled a lifetime of commitment, love and happiness to their family, the Lord and each other.
Mr. Roper retired from Navistar International after 32 years of dedicated service to the company. Each year he and his wife would travel to Atlanta for the annual retirees luncheon.
Granddaddy accepted the Lord as his personal savior early in life and was a faithful servant until his death. He and Grandmother have been members of Crosscreek Baptist Church for the last 30 years. Every Sunday morning he greeted the congregation with a bulletin, handshakes for the men, hugs for the ladies and was proud to be an usher collecting tithes and offerings from the congregation.
Mr. Roper was predeceased by his parents, five brothers and his beloved son, Alan Sims Roper. He is survived by his loving wife, Violet Carline Sims Roper; daughters, Brenn Davis (Douglas), Joy Willis (Arthur); six grandchildren, Ty Mask (Kip), April Richmond (Matt), Wesley Davis (Jenny), Zachary Willis, Taylor Willis, Cody Willis; great grandchildren, Kori and Eli Mask, Davis, Reese and Casey Richmond, Katelyn, Nolan and Brantley Davis; sister, Sara Nell Peacock.
Pallbearers will be Ty Mask, Wesley Davis, Zachary Willis, Cody Willis, Matt Richmond, Heath Allred and Calvin Gunn.
Visitation will be Tuesday, June 22, 2010 from 6 to 8 PM at Crosscreek Baptist Church. Funeral services will also be held at the church on Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at 2 PM, Dr. Jay Kieve officiating. Burial will be at Fourmile Cemetery, Fourmile, Alabama immediately following the service. The family requests no flowers but donations may be made in his memory to Crosscreek Baptist Church, 600 Crosscreek Trail, Pelham, AL 35124.
