If you don’t believe the words of the apostle Paul, consider the words of the great theologian, Bob Dylan.

He wrote in a song on his 1979 album Slow Train Coming; “But you’re gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed. You’re gonna have to serve somebody, well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord. But you’re gonna have to serve somebody.”

Both of them are exclaiming the same truth; it doesn’t matter who you are, everyone is worshipping someone or something.

Human beings were made to worship and serve God. Instead, humans have refused to make God the most important thing and have worshipped something else in the world.

Worship simply means you are giving admiration or devotion to something. Something causes you to wake up in the morning and make the decisions you make.

What is at the center of your life driving your thoughts, actions and emotions?

What gives you security, comfort, stability or acceptance?

What makes you happy, sad, excited, bitter, depressed, fearful or worried? That is one of the most basic questions God asks the human heart.

There are many things humans try to cram into their hearts to satisfy their desires. It could be material possessions, relationships, ideas or even religion.

These things are often not inherently evil and neither are the desires. C.S. Lewis said our desires are often not too strong but rather too weak.

He says humans are far too easily satisfied that we are often “like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.”

Everyone is worshipping something. Don’t settle for anything less than God. Give that some thought today.
