Arkansas native wins Southern Amateur at Shoal Creek

Alex Carpenter of Little Rock, Ark., shot a four-day total of 16-under par 272 to claim the 104th Southern Amateur Championship, held July 14-17 at Shoal Creek Country Club.
Carpenter, who received an open invitation to join the field in the Arnold Palmer Invitational on the PGA Tour in 2011 with his victory, fired a 7-under par 65 in the final round July 17.
Patrick Cantlay of Los Alamitos, Calif., carded a total of 15-under par 273 to finish second overall.
Barber Blayne of Lake City, Fla., came in third overall with his score of 13-over par 275. University of Alabama golfer Bud Cauley, of Jacksonville, Fla., finished fifth overall with a tournament total of 11-over par 277.
Glenn Northcutt of Dothan, who won the Greystone Invitational last month, finished in a tie for 10th with his 8-over par 280.
