A 57-year-old Calera man was arrested and charged with murder following a July 18 incident on Hiawatha Road.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office took Bobby Gene Smith into custody after they received a call reporting someone had been shot in the 400 block of Hiawatha Road.

After receiving the call, Sheriff’s Department deputies and Southeast Shelby Rescue paramedics arrived at the residence and discovered the suspect’s 34-year-old son, Christopher Gene Smith, had been shot and killed.

After investigating the incident, deputies discovered there had been an ongoing domestic dispute between the father and son, and arrested Bobby Gene Smith without incident.

As of July 19, Smith was being held in the Shelby County Jail on a $100,000 bond.
