NCAA Championships coming to Veterans Park in Hoover

Veterans Park in Hoover has been selected by the National Collegiate Athletic Association as the host site for the South Regional meet in the 2010 NCAA Cross Country Championships on Saturday, November 13.

Samford University will serve as the official host organization for the event with assistance from Hoover Track Foundation. The event will feature 50–60 collegiate cross country teams. This meet qualifies teams and individuals to compete at the NCAA National Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Since the development of the cross country course and opening of Veterans Park on Valleydale in 2006, Hoover has served as host to a wide variety of cross country events over the past four years. Some of the events include the Great American Race, Southeast Cross Country Showdown, Gulf South Conference Cross Country Championships, OVC Cross Country Championships, Samford Invitational, Nike Team Nationals South Regionals, Alabama Community College Conference Cross Country Championships, Hoover High School Invitational, Spain Park High School Invitational and State High School Sectionals.

“The City of Hoover is proud to serve as the site of the South Region meet for the 2010 NCAA Cross Country Championships in November at Veterans Park,” said Hoover Mayor Tony Petelos. “We are thrilled that the NCAA determined that Veterans Parkwould be the best venue for this event. We are looking forward to welcoming the cross country participants and visitors to our community.”

Veterans Park on Valleydale is an 82-acre public park owned by the City of Hoover. The park is located on Valleydale Road in front of Spain Park High School. The park features a cross country course, two pavilions, two lakes, three sand volleyball courts, two playgrounds, including one accessible playground. Veterans Park also includes a plaza honoring military veterans.
