Former Shelby County stars lead Samford scrimmage

Former high school football standouts in Shelby County are leading the charge in Samford University’s preseason scrimmages.

For the second straight week, past Friday night stars have played a key role in a Bulldogs’ scrimmage.

Former Briarwood Christian School standout Jonathan Sillers rushed for 25 yards on four carries in Samford’s second preseason scrimmage. David Strider of Chelsea scored on a 3-yard touchdown run in the scrimmage.

Shelby County High School graduate Tae Lewis intercepted a pass and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown in the scrimmage.

Samford opens the 2010 season Sept. 4 on the road at Florida State. The game will be televised nationally on ESPNU. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m.
