HOOVER — The city of Hoover will see an increase of about $1.6 million in the budget for the next fiscal year.

Hoover Mayor Tony Petelos introduced the city’s budget for fiscal year 2011 at a city council work session Sept. 2.

The budget is set at $86.28 million, $1.61 million more than the $84.67 million budget for fiscal year 2010.

Petelos said the budget for fiscal year 2010 is a conservative budget, but one that responds to the growth Hoover is starting to see again.

“This budget is lower than what we collected this year,” Petelos said. “We’re ahead of projections. We’ve met projections every year for the last six years.”

Petelos also stressed the city still has a strong reserve fund.

“We have not touched any of our reserve account money, and that stands at more than $31 million today,” he said.

The budget includes $2 million for the Hoover School System.

The budget also includes expenditures of $50,000 for SafeHouse of Shelby County, $5,000 for the Shelby County Children’s Advocate Center and $12,000 for the Shelby County Humane Society.
