Former Shelby County standout named Player of the Week

Former Shelby County High School football standout Darion Sutton was named the Southern Conference’s Special Teams Player of the Week by SouthernPigskin.com following his performance in Samford University’s 38-35 win Sept. 16 over Newberry College.
Sutton, a sophomore linebacker for the Bulldogs, returned a blocked punt 24 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to give Samford the lead for good in the victory. Sutton registered nine tackles and a sack in the win.
For the season, Sutton ranks second on the team in tackles with 20 stops, including two sacks.
Sutton was named the Shelby County Reporter Player of the Year following his senior season with the Wildcats in 2008.
Former Briarwood Christian School standout Jonathan Sillers, a sophomore running back at Samford, scored on a 4-yard touchdown run in the Bulldogs’ win against Newberry.
