The University of Montevallo men’s soccer team remained undefeated this season with a 2-2 tie with host North Georgia College and State University in a Peach Belt Conference match Sept. 18.

Senior Nathaniel Foster paced the Falcons (5-0-1, 1-0-1 PBC) with two first-half goals. Senior James Steer recorded an assist.

Freshman goalkeeper Brendan Ledgeway recorded two saves.

The Falcons, who are ranked No. 13 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of American poll, set the mark for the best start in school history with a 3-2 double-overtime win Sept. 15 over the University of Alabama-Huntsville.

Spain Park graduate Vance Curro, a junior at Montevallo, scored the game winner for the Falcons in the victory.

Sophomore Stephen Beatty scored both goals in regulation. Ledgeway finished with a pair of saves.

Montevallo volleyball team wins seventh straight match

The University of Montevallo volleyball team won its seventh-straight match, including its third Peach Belt Conference match, with a 25-22, 25-16, 25-23 sweep Sept. 18 of UNC-Pembroke.

Freshman Taylor Chapman led the Falcons (7-4, 3-0 PBC) with 12 kills and seven digs. Manyi Ati, Virginia Clay and Rebecca Dowd added nine kills each.

Anna Garrison, who was named the Peach Belt Conference’s Specialist of the Week, finished with 39 assists and Dowd recorded a team-high 17 digs.

Montevallo also picked up a 27-25, 25-23, 25-16 sweep of Francis Marion and a 25-17, 25-19, 25-21 sweep of North Georgia last week.

Chapman recorded 10 kills and six digs in the Sept. 17 win over Francis Marion.

Dowd led the Falcons with 12 kills in the first home match of the season Sept. 14 against North Georgia.

Women’s soccer splits matches

The University of Montevallo women’s soccer team picked up a 2-1 win Sept. 15 over the University of Alabama-Huntsville before falling 4-0 to North Georgia in a Peach Belt Conference match Sept. 18.

Freshman Asgerdur Palsdottir scored the game-winning goal for the Falcons against UAH. Montevallo also scored a goal on a mistake by the UAH goalkeeper. Montevallo goalkeeper Alyssa Maxwell recorded six saves in the match.

Maxwell recorded eight saves in the Falcons’ loss to North Georgia. Montevallo fell to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in Peach Belt Conference play with the loss.

Cross country teams compete at Mercer meet

The University of Montevallo women’s cross country team finished second at the Mercer RunFit Sports Invitational in Macon, Ga.

The Falcons were the top Division II team at the Sept. 18 meet. The only team to best the Falcons was Division I Mercer University, which hosted the meet.

Freshman In-Mi Matsunaga led the Falcons as she finished seventh overall with a time of 20:31.80. Sophomore Kaley Glover finished just one spot back in eighth with a time of 20:37.50.

For the second-straight race, the University of Montevallo men’s cross country team finished fourth. The Falcons competed against 12 other schools at the Mercer RunFit Sports Invitational.

The Falcons top runner was freshman Mark McDonald, who finished 17th overall with a time of 28:31.60, besting his previous top-time by over a minute.

Golf teams open 2010 season

The University of Montevallo women’s golf team finished runner-up to host Birmingham-Southern College in a tri-match Sept. 19 at Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail’s Oxmoor Valley in Birmingham

Montevallo carded a team score of 344, which put the Falcons six strokes back of the Panthers. Huntingdon finished third with a score of 384.

Montevallo senior Emily Gibson shot a 3-over par 75 to finish as the individual medalist in the tri-match.

The University of Montevallo men’s golf team opened the 2010 season Sept. 6-7 at the Kiawah Island Invitational in Kiawah Island, S.C.

The Falcons finished 19th overall in the field of 21 teams. Ruwaldt Viljoen paced the Falcons with his 6-over par 150, which placed him in a eight-way tie for 34th overall in individual standings at the two-day tournament.

Viljoen fired a 3-over par 75 in each round.

Basketball teams release 2010-2011 schedules

The University of Montevallo men’s and women’s 2010-2011 basketball schedules each include a trip to a Division I school for an exhibition game.

The Montevallo men will travel to the University of Louisiana-Lafeyette to take on the Ragin’ Cajuns in their exhibition opener Nov. 9.

Highlights of the Falcons’ schedule include the Coca-Cola Classic, which will feature games against North Alabama and West Florida at BankTrust Arena in late November.

The Montevallo women will face Southeastern Conference foe Mississippi State in their exhibition opener Nov. 7.
