Briarwood Christian School head football coach Fred Yancey picked up career win No. 200 with the Lions as Briarwood defeated Pinson Valley 45-6 in a Class 5A, Region 5 contest Oct. 8.
Yancey said the Lions excelled in all three phases of the game in the win.
“Our kicker, Wilson Whorton, kept us alive early on,” Yancey said. “I thought our defense played real fast and with a lot of enthusiasm. Our offensive line allowed us to run the football at them at key times. It was a good team win.”
Daniel Robert scored the first touchdown for the Lions in the first quarter when he reeled in a 36-yard scoring strike from quarterback Ben Craft. Whorton added the extra point to give Briarwood a 7-0 lead.
Sam Whitaker scored on a 15-yard touchdown run and Craft added 1-yard touchdown run as the Lions extended their lead to 21-0 at halftime.
Whorton kicked a 34-yard field goal to push the lead to 24-0. Craft added a 4-yard touchdown run and Whitaker scored on a 12-yard run as Briarwood held a 38-6 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Tanner Cunningham capped the scoring for the Lions with his 20-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Whorton nailed all six point-after attempts.
Briarwood plays host to Shelby County in a Class 5A, Region 5 game Oct. 8.
