Chelsea High School got four touchdown passes from quarterback Jake Ganus to top Erwin, 38-32, for its fourth region win Oct 8.

Ganus connected with three different receivers — Julius McCall, Jake Campbell and Matthew Graben — for his scoring strikes and finished 8-for-13 for 221 yards.

“I’m very happy for the kids,” Chelsea coach Wade Waldrop said. “We had a good week of practice, and it was a good way to end the week with a tough win. It was a physical game.”

McCall was on the receiving end of two touchdowns and hauled in four catches for 168 yards while adding 34 yards on the ground for the Hornets, who improved to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in Class 5A, Region 5.

Running back Blake McLaughlin led all Hornet rushers with 59 yards.

The defense also contributed to the scoring, as sophomore Antwon Williams returned a third-quarter interception for a touchdown.

Placekicker Ashley Page connected on a 22-yard field goal early in the contest to give the Hornets their first points of the game. McCall’s first touchdown reception along with Campbell’s second-quarter 22-yard touchdown grab gave Chelsea a 17-12 halftime lead.

The Hornets will host Talledega in another Class 5A, Region 5 tussle Oct. 15.
