Kingwood falls short of return trip to AISA volleyball Final Four

The Kingwood Christian School volleyball team ended its 2010 season with a loss to Southern Academy in the Alabama Independent Schools Association Class 2A, Region 2 tournament Oct. 19 at East Memorial Christian Academy.

The third-seeded Lions fell to No. 2 seed Southern Academy 10-25, 16-25, 25-23, 23-25 in the AISA Class 2A, Region 2 semifinals.

The loss snapped a string of nine consecutive appearances in the AISA Class 2A Final Four by Kingwood, which ended the season with a 20-17 record.

Casey Whitmer led Kingwood with eight kills, seven service aces and six digs in the semifinal match.

Katie McElroy added a team-high 18 digs to go along with seven service aces.

Kingwood defeated host East Memorial, the tournament’s No. 6 seed, 25-9, 25-15, 25-13 in the AISA Class 2A, Region 2 quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals.

Millie Opper led the Lions with seven kills and four service aces in the quarterfinal match.

Karley Chamblee added a team-high 23 assists to go along with eight service aces. McElroy added eight digs and seven service aces.

Opper finished with a total of nine kills, five service aces and six digs in the AISA Class 2A, Region 2 tournament.

Chamblee recorded a team-high 38 assists in the tournament to go along with eight digs. McElroy tallied a total of 22 digs and 14 service aces.

Whitmer registered 12 kills and nine digs in the tournament.
