Former Thompson High School two-sport standout Marcus Edwards was recently named a National Player of the Week following his performance in Tennessee Tech University’s 34-20 win Oct. 16 over Eastern Illinois.

The Sports Network/Fathead.com named Edwards a co-Defensive Player of the Week in the Football Championship Subdivision following the win. Edwards also shared Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors with teammate Caleb Mitchell.

Edwards, a 6-foot-1, 225-pound sophomore linebacker, tied the school record with five quarterback sacks and finished with seven total tackles in the victory.

Edwards now leads Tennessee Tech with eight quarterback sacks in seven games, which is two shy of the school’s single-season record of 10.

Edwards’ five sacks against the Panthers tied the mark originally set by Elois Grooms against Murray State in 1974, and matched in 1998 by Branon Vaughn against Eastern Kentucky.

Edwards was a two-sport star in football and basketball during his playing career at Thompson.
