Evangel falls in championship game

The Evangel Christian School Lightning ended their 2010 football season with a 20-8 loss to Appling Christian Academy (Ga.) in the National Association of Christian Athletes Division II championship game Nov. 12 in Dayton, Tenn.

Junior quarterback Hayden Brown, who was named Evangel’s offensive most valuable player in the championship game, scored the only touchdown in the game for the Lightning.

Brown, senior Josh Flanders, senior Cameron Cohill and junior Aaron Walker were each selected to the All-Tournament team.

Brown completed 6-of-21 passes for 151 yards with three interceptions in the championship game. Brown rushed for 50 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries.

Walker caught four passes for 117 yards.

Evangel (8-6) racked up 214 total yards on offense, including 63 rushing yards.

Appling Christian scored a touchdown on a passing play in the first quarter and carried an 8-0 lead into the locker room at halftime. Appling Christian scored two touchdowns in the third quarter to push the lead to 20-0 before Evangel finally got on the scoreboard.

Brown scored on a 3-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and Nathan Scott ran it in for the 2-point conversion to cap the scoring in the game.

Flanders led the way defensively with 15 tackles, including three tackles for a loss.

Walker added 13 tackles, including one tackle for a loss. Brown finished with eight tackles. Senior Michael Entrekin registered seven tackles.
