High school basketball roundup: Westminster wins tournament opener

BOYS

The Westminster School at Oak Mountain boys’ basketball team defeated host Indian Springs 54-51 in the school’s Tip-Off Tournament Nov. 11.

Adam Gurley led the Knights (2-0) with 21 points. Jeffrey Stanford added 18 points.

Charlie Simpson led Indian Springs (1-1) with 11 points.

Westminster will face Oak Grove in the championship game Nov. 12. Indian Springs will meet Shades Mountain Christian in the consolation game Nov. 12.

Oak Mountain escapes with road win at Sylacauga

The Oak Mountain High School boys’ basketball team opened its season Nov. 11 with a 59-58 win on the road at Sylacauga.

The Eagles jumped out to a 21-10 lead after the first quarter before the Aggies made a comeback. Sophomore Heath Quinn hit a jumper with two seconds remaining to seal the win for Oak Mountain.

Senior Garrett Cosgrove led the Eagles (1-0) with 18 points and nine rebounds.

Jake Delaney chipped in 16 points. Quinn finished with 13 points and six boards.

Kingwood pounds Meadowview Christian

The Kingwood Christian School boys’ basketball team coasted to a 78-27 win over Meadowview Christian.

Guard Daniel Fillingim led the Lions (1-0) with 22 points. Forward Madison Webb added 11 points.

Guards Jordan Myers and Josh Purvis tallied 10 points each.

GIRLS

Indian Springs wins tournament opener

The Indian Springs School girls’ basketball team defeated Oak Grove 36-34 in the opener of its Tip-Off Tournament Nov. 11.

Andrea Mayo led Indian Springs (2-0) with 19 points. Mayo added 12 rebounds in the victory.

Indian Springs will meet Shelby County, which defeated Shades Mountain Christian 46-29 in its opener, in the championship game Nov. 12.

Shelby County defeats Shades Mountain

The Wildcats raced out to an early lead in a 46-29 win over Shades Mountain Christian in their season opener Nov. 11.

Aulicia Nunn led Shelby County (1-0) with 21 points. Nunn added 10 rebounds.

Alysia Perkins added seven points. Alexis Lewis finished with a team-high 13 rebounds.

Hallie Brown dished out four assists.

Kingwood defeats Meadowview Christian

The Kingwood girls’ basketball team jumped out to an early lead and held on for a 48-42 win over Meadowview Christian in its season opener.

The Lions outscored Meadowview Christian 12-3 in the opening quarter.

Katie Etheridge led Kingwood (1-0) with 20 points. Etheridge added 10 rebounds.

Casey Whitmer added eight points and a team-high 16 rebounds in the victory.
