Charles Jefferson Higgins, age 73, of Palm Bay, Fla. died Monday, Jan. 3, 2011 in Melbourne, Fla. He was born on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1937 in Shelby, son of the late Arter Higgins and the late Edna Connell Higgins.
He was a bridge builder for the Shelby County Highway Department.
Mr. Higgins is survived by his wife, Edna W. Higgins; sons, Ricky Gulledge of Prattville and Bruce Higgins (Carol) of Montevallo; daughter, Wanda Kay Smith (Jose Martinez) of Calera; grandchildren, Shannon Gulledge, Brad Gulledge (Barbara), Bridget Sanders (Nathan), Ashley Castellanos (Edgar) and Westley Smith; great-grandchildren, Heather, Heaven, Chloe, Courtney, Mason, Hannah, Louis and Valeria; great-great-grandchild, Colton; sisters, Bonnie Schrader (Johnny), Jean Etress and Jewel Henderson (John).
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arter and Edna Connell Higgins; and brothers: J.R., Oscar and Homer Higgins.
Friends will be received on Thursday, Jan. 6 from 6-8 p.m., at Martin Chapel. Services will be held on Friday, Jan. 7 at 1 p.m. at Martin Chapel with Rev. Rodger Hamaker officiating. Interment followed in Spring Creek Cemetery in Shelby.
