Calera wrestlers top Hoover in Homewood Duals

The Calera High School wrestling team defeated Hoover 53-21 in a match Jan. 22 at the Homewood Duals.
Nine Eagles won their individual matches against Hoover.
Jarrett Seiger of Calera earned a 15-0 technical fall over Joey Reynolds of Hoover in the 119-pound match. Jake Thomas of Calera pinned Hoover’s Brandon Murphy in 1:55 in the 135-pound match.
Calera’s Coby Mize pinned Matthew Achurra of Hoover in one minute in the 152-pound match. Danny Diaz of Calera pinned Grant Wyatt in 2:30 in the 215-pound match.
Austin Dowdy, Keenan Agee, Shawn O’Neill, Cody Thomaston and Kevin Murry each won their matches by forfeit.
Calera also defeated Chelsea 41-36 in a match at the Homewood Duals. Seven Calera wrestlers won their individual matches against Chelsea.
Seiger earned a 19-1 technical fall decision over Blake Travelstead of Chelsea in the 119-pound match. Thomas pinned Chelsea’s Michael Early in 1:30 in the 140-pound match.
Mize pinned Zakary Van Der Geest of Chelsea in 1:20 in the 152-pound match. Diaz pinned David Downard of Chelsea in 3:10 in the heavyweight match.
Agee, O’Neill and Murry each won their matches by forfeit.
The Eagles fell to Spain Park 60-15 in a match at the Homewood Duals. Three Calera wrestlers won their individual matches against Spain Park.
Calera’s Brian McDonald pinned Jackson Cotney of Spain Park in 1:20 in the 103-pound match. Mize pinned Alex Potts of Spain Park in 30 seconds in the 152-pound match.
Diaz earned an 8-3 decision over Martin Canales of Spain Park in the heavyweight match.
Calera fell to Vestavia Hills 60-18 in a match at the Homewood Duals. Four Eagles won their individual matches against Vestavia Hills.
Dowdy pinned Michael Parker of Vestavia Hills in 1:25 in the 119-pound match. Thomaston pinned Timothy Taylor of Vestavia Hills in 1:30 in the 160-pound match.
Seiger and Mize each won their matches by forfeit.
Calera dropped a pool match with Gardendale 42-24. Four Eagles won their individual matches against Gardendale.
Seiger pinned Clay Downer of Gardendale in 4:20 the 119-pound match. Mize pinned Chase Downer of Gardendale in 2:30 in the 152-pound match.
McDonald won the 103-pound match by forfeit. Dowdy won the 125-pound match by forfeit.
Calera fell to Thompson 76-3 in a pool match. Seiger was the lone Eagle wrestler to record a win as he earned a 16-9 win over Cody McDanal of Thompson in the 119-pound match.
