Chelsea tops Briarwood in tournament opener

The Chelsea High School boys’ basketball team defeated rival Briarwood Christian School 51-47 in the opening game of the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 5A, Area 7 tournament Feb. 8 at Sylacauga High School.

Jake Ganus led the Hornets (13-15) with a game-high 18 points. Ganus also grabbed 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double.

Jason Laatsch led Briarwood Christian (21-10) with 11 points.

Justin Bice added 10 points.

Chelsea will face host Sylacauga in the Class 5A, Area 7 tournament semifinals Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m.
