Falcons win women’s tennis opener

First-year University of Montevallo women’s tennis coach Mark McGuigan picked up his first career victory as he led the Falcons to a 7-2 season-opening win Feb. 9 over the University of West Georgia.
Montevallo (1-0) won two of the three doubles matches before winning five of the six singles matches to seal the victory.
Junior Helene Nordgreen and senior Calli Robinson picked up the No. 1 doubles win 8-0. Freshman Kayla Hackett, a Chelsea graduate, and senior Kodi Bobo picked up the No. 2 doubles win 8-3. West Georgia won the No. 3 doubles 8-5.
Hackett was the first to finish her singles match, as she won the No. 3 match 6-0, 6-0. Robinson then took the No. 2 singles match 6-1, 6-0. Nordgreen sealed the victory in the No. 1 singles match, winning 6-4, 6-0. Bobo won the No. 4 singles match 6-0, 6-1.
Sophomore Amy McGucken had the toughest match at No. 5 singles, as she lost the first set 6-4 before storming back for a 7-5 win in the second set. McGucken held on to win in the third set 10-6.
The Wolves took the No. 6 singles 6-2, 6-3.
