Calera High School freshman Coby Mize became the first wrestler in school history to win a match in the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 4A-1A state wrestling tournament Feb. 18 at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville.

Mize, who became the Eagles’ first ever qualifier for the AHSAA Class 4A-1A state tournament in the program’s first season, opened the state tournament by dropping a 10-9 decision to Hunter Edwards of Dora in a 152-pound championship quarterfinal match Feb. 18.

Mize responded by earning a 14-6 major decision over Malachi Cole of Deshler in a 152-pound consolation match. Mize was knocked out of the state tournament after dropping an 8-5 decision to Dylan Bishop of Susan Moore in the 152-pound consolation semifinals.

Mize recorded Calera’s first two team points in the state tournament.
