Chelsea splits opening day doubleheader

The Chelsea High School baseball team split a doubleheader with Holtville and Bibb County on opening day Feb. 21.
The Hornets (1-1) defeated Holtville 12-1.
Jake Campbell led Chelsea at the plate with a grand-slam homerun in the fourth inning. Campbell also picked up the win on the mound after giving up only one hit with five strikeouts in five innings.
Eli Bashour finished 2-for-2 at the plate with three RBIs. Davis Shoemaker went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Justen Moore finished 1-for-3 at the plate with a stolen base.
Chelsea fell to Bibb County 15-9.
Bashour led the Hornets at the plate as he finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Hunter Picklesimer went 3-for-3 with two RBIs.
Bibb County jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first inning after taking advantage of three Chelsea errors and three walks.
“We made too many costly mistakes early in the game,” said Chelsea coach Michael Stallings.
