Falcons edge Columbus State on last-second shot

University of Montevallo junior Tyrell Coleman hit two of the biggest 3-pointers of the season against Columbus State University to give the Falcons a 62-60 win Feb. 26 and the No. 2 seed in the Peach Belt Conference’s West Division.

The Falcons (17-9 overall, 10-7 in Peach Belt Conference) will host Georgia College and State University in the opening round of the Peach Belt Conference tournament March 1 inside BankTrust Arena.

With the Falcons down 57-56 with 30 seconds remaining in the game, Coleman received a pass from junior Antoine Davis and knocked down a clutch 3-pointer to give Montevallo a 59-57 lead. Columbus State junior Jarmarquis Steverson responded with a 3-pointer with 11 seconds left to give his team a 60-59 lead.

Following a couple of timeouts, the Falcons inbounded the ball and Coleman took a dribble before launching a shot from three feet beyond the 3-point line with a defender in his face and found nothing but net with just two seconds left in the game to clinch the victory.

The Falcons were led by Davis, who scored 14 points, dished out seven assists, grabbed six rebounds and finished with three steals.

Senior Ronald Severtsgaard had a double-double in his final regular season game with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Coleman finished the game with 11 points, including three 3-pointers. Redshirt sophomore Jonas Brown scored nine points, all of which were from 3-point range, and grabbed four boards.

Junior Jervan Jackson scored eight points and grabbed seven boards. Junior Ryan Westbrooks chipped in seven points.

Montevallo hit 39.1 percent of its shots from the field, including 31.8 percent from 3-point range. The Cougars hit 47.8 percent from the floor and 40 percent from beyond the arc.

The Falcons dominated the glass and outrebounded the Cougars 38-26. Montevallo finished with 22 offensive boards.
