Montevallo women clinch conference tournament berth following win

The University of Montevallo women’s basketball team defeated Columbus State University 55-37 to clinch the final seed Feb. 26 in the upcoming Peach Belt Conference tournament.

The Falcons (10-16 overall, 6-11 in Peach Belt Conference) will travel to top-seed Clayton State University March 2 at 6 p.m. in the opening round of the Peach Belt Conference tournament.

All 10 players who saw the floor scored in the Falcons’ victory over Columbus State.

Junior Tiffany McClure led the Falcons with 11 points and seven rebounds.

Senior Tiaren Young, who led Montevallo on the boards with nine rebounds, added seven points. Young also tossed in a pair of blocks and a pair of steals. Junior Shavonne Seymore scored eight points while grabbing six boards. Seymore had two blocks as well.

Montevallo hit 40.7 percent of its shots, including a sizzling 52 percent in the second half. The Falcons’ stifling defense held the Lady Cougars to just 22.9 percent shooting, including an ice cold 19.4 percent in the second half.

Montevallo took its largest lead of the first half at the 7:20 mark following a layup by Seymore, which gave the Falcons a 19-13 lead. The first half ended with the Falcons up 25-21.

The Falcons began an 8-0 run, capped off by a 3-pointer from senior Jessica Collins, early in the second half to take a 38-25 lead. Montevallo kept a double-digit lead and eventually pushed its lead to 18 points with 59 seconds left in the game.
