Warriors swept in baseball doubleheader

The Thompson High School baseball team dropped games against Russell County and Southside-Gadsden in a doubleheader Feb. 25.

The Warriors (2-2) fell to Russell County 4-3.

Russell County jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and held on for the victory. Thompson scored single runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings to keep it close but could never take the lead.

Matt Haskins and Taylor Bria each drove in runs for the Warriors. Tyler Gamble went 2-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.

Jonathan Keller (1-1) pitched well in a complete-game effort but took the loss after allowing four runs, including three earned runs, on nine hits with four strikeouts and three walks.

Thompson fell to Southside-Gadsden 13-12.

The Warriors pounded out 15 hits but came up just short in the slugfest on a cold and windy night.

Skylar Estell went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Warriors.

Gus Williford went 3-for-5. Adam McKenzie went 2-for3 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored. Matt Haskins drove in three runs.

Trent Harper (0-1) pitched well but picked up the loss in relief.
