Thompson softball opens season with three wins in Hillcrest tournament

The Thompson High School softball team picked up three wins in the its season-opening tournament Feb. 25-26 at Hillcrest High School in Tuscaloosa.

The Warriors (3-3) picked up wins over Hale County, Athens and Florence during the tournament. Thompson fell to Tuscaloosa County and Sumiton Christian in pool games before falling to defending Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 6A champion Hueytown in the tournament semifinals Feb. 26.

Thompson defeated Hale County 7-0 in its opening game of the tournament.

Taylor Powell, Marly Terrell and Ashleigh Short each drove in runs in the victory. Rachel Rigney picked up the win in the circle.

The Warriors edged Athens 3-2.

Terrell and Sarah Beth Holdbrooks each recorded hits in the win. Powell picked up the win in the circle.

Thompson defeated Florence 2-1.

Short drove in one of the Warriors’ two runs in the victory. Rigney picked up the win in the circle.

The Warriors fell to Tuscaloosa County 5-0. Powell took the loss in the circle.

Thompson fell to Sumiton Christian 1-0. Rigney took the loss after giving up one unearned run in the defeat.

The Warriors fell to Hueytown 2-1 in the semifinals.

Terrell drove in the Warriors’ lone run in the bottom of the first inning. Rigney gave up two unearned runs in the loss.
