Pelham edges Tuscaloosa County in soccer match

The Pelham High School girls’ soccer team edged Tuscaloosa County 3-2 in high school soccer action March 7.

Ashley Gardner, Jessica Bird and Natalia Alcaino scored one goal each for the Panthers (6-2) in the victory.

Gardner scored the game-clinching goal in the 47th minute off an assist from Bird and Cassie Shiflett.

Gardner had an assist on Bird’s goal in the 43rd minute, which tied the game at 2-2. Gardner also had an assist on Alcaino’s goal in the opening half.

Pelham goalkeeper Selina Delgadillo recorded eight saves for the Panthers.

BOYS

The Pelham High School boys’ soccer team edged Tuscaloosa County 4-3 in high school soccer action March 7.

The Panthers improved to 3-1 in Class 6A, Section 6 matches and 4-6-1 overall.

Pelham trailed 3-0 at halftime.

Two defensive miscues by us and a nice shot from outside the box on a set play gave the lead to Tuscaloosa County.

With 32 minutes left, Ryan Tapley is fouled in the box and converts a penalty kick to cut the deficit to 3-1. Three minutes later Ryan Tapley scored with an assist by Oscar Pineda.

At the 27 minutes mark in the second half, Phillip Dublin brought the ball up the right side and struck the ball into the box, where the ball deflected off a Tuscaloosa County player into the goal.

With 22 minutes remaining, Phillip Dublin crossed the ball into the box where Roy Canales headed the ball into the back of the net for the game-winning goal.

Cameron Foss and Hunter Payant shared time in the goal to preserve the win. Payant finished with five saves. Cameron Foss added four saves in the victory.
