Montevallo women split pair of matches

The University of Montevallo women’s tennis team picked up a 7-2 win in a match against Tuskegee University in non-conference action March 29 before falling to top-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University 6-0 in a rain-shortened Peach Belt Conference match March 30.

Montevallo (4-16 overall, 0-10 in Peach Belt Conference) swept the doubles’ matches against Tuskegee and won four singles’ matches in the 7-2 win. Against Armstrong Atlantic, the two teams played just the singles matches and the Pirates won all six matches 6-0, 6-0.

Senior Kodi Bobo, sophomore Amy McGucken and freshman Yulia Shvetsova led the Falcons in the singles’ matches against Tuskegee, dropping just one game each.

Bobo won the No. 4 singles’ match 6-0, 6-1. McGucken won No. 5 singles’ match 6-1, 6-0. Shvetsova, who won the No. 6 singles’ match 6-1, 6-0, earned the first victory in her collegiate career.

Senior Calli Robinson picked up the Falcons’ fourth win in the No. 3 singles’ match as she won 6-3, 6-3.

Freshman Kayla Hackett, a Chelsea graduate, and Bobo led the Falcons in doubles’ action as they dominated the No. 2 doubles’ match, winning 8-0.

Junior Helene Nordgreen and Robinson won the No. 1 doubles’ match 8-4. McGucken and Shvetsova got all they could handle in the No. 3 doubles’ match before winning 9-7.

Montevallo fell in all six singles’ matches against Armstrong Atlantic 6-0, 6-0, with all six members of the Pirates’ lineup ranked in the top-50 nationally. Montevallo was unable to play the doubles’ matches due to rain in the area all afternoon.
