James Chapman, age 50, died on Monday, April 4 at St. Vincent’s Hospital of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Secretary of State Beth Chapman; their sons, Taylor and Thatcher; foster son, Anthony; mother, Ruth Chapman; and sisters Donna Powers and Patti Griffin of Hoover.

He was employed 17 years with Alabama Power Company and 10 years by Leo Ticheli Productions.

He graduated from West End High School and the University of Montevallo, served on the Shelby County Law Enforcement Personnel Board and volunteered for multiple charities. He was instrumental in his wife’s successful campaigns for state auditor and secretary of state.

Chapman was a Republican, a member of the NRA and National Society of Broadcast Engineers.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 6 from noon-2 p.m. at Metropolitan Church of God with the funeral beginning at 2 p.m. A graveside service will follow at Southern Heritage on Highway 119.
