Spain Park sweeps Vestavia Hills to capture area crown

The Spain Park High School baseball team swept Vestavia Hills in the final two games of a three-game series for the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 6A, Area 12 crown April 14.
Following an 8-3 loss to the Rebels in the opener April 12, Spain Park responded with a 8-3 win in the opener and a 5-4 win in the nightcap April 14 to clinch home-field advantage in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs.
Mikey White led the Jaguars (30-9 overall, 5-2 in Class 6A, Area 12) at the plate in the nightcap as he finished 2-for-3 and scored two runs.
Charlie McPherson finished 2-for-3 at the plate and scored one run. Alex Close went 1-for-1 at the plate and drove in a run. Chris Ellis finished 1-for-4 at the plate and drove in one run.
Paul Angel went 1-for-2 at the plate. Paul Hosemann and Carter White drove in one run each in the victory. Marks Abernathy and Nathan Brock scored one run each.
Mikey White started on the mound and gave up two earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts and a walk in 3 1/3 innings.
Colton Freeman earned the win in relief after giving up two earned runs on two hits with nine strikeouts and four walks in 3 2/3 innings.

Angel, who drove in one run and scored two runs, went 1-for-3 at the plate. McPherson, who drove in one run and scored one run, finished 1-for-3 at the plate. Alex Close finished 1-for-2 at the plate and drove in two runs. Brock finished 1-for-3 at the plate and drove in one run.
Ellis also drove in one run in the victory. Austin Walker, Hunter Kahn and Abernathy scored one run each.
Alex Close started on the mound and earned the win after giving up three earned runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and three walks in six innings.
Hunter Hall struck out one batter in one inning in relief.
