Thompson defeats Mountain Brook in playoff match

The Thompson High School boys’ soccer team picked up its first ever win in the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 6A playoffs following a 2-1 win over Mountain Brook in overtime in a first round match May 3.
The two teams battled to a scoreless tie in the first 40 minutes.
Thompson took a 1-0 lead with 30 minutes remaining in the contest when Dylan Barrett passed the ball to Paul Karanja, who out ran the Mountain Brook defense and popped the ball into the right side of the goal.
The Spairtans tied the game with 20 minutes left in regulation on a penalty kick following a hand-ball violation on the Warriors.
After the two teams battled to a scoreless tie in the first five-minute overtime session, Barrett fought for the ball and passed it to Jacob Marasckin late in the second overtime. Marasckin flicked the ball in front of the goal to Karanja, who headed the game-winning goal with 20 seconds remaining in the overtime session.
