Rebels headed back to championship series

The Coosa Valley Academy baseball team is headed back to the Alabama Independent Schools Association Class 1A baseball championship series following a sweep of rival Cornerstone Christian School in the second round of the playoffs May 4.

Coosa Valley defeated Cornerstone Christian 10-3 in the opening game before clinching the series with a 12-1 win in the nightcap.

The Rebels (39-6) will face the winner of the Crenshaw Christian-Sumter Academy series in the best-of-three championship series May 10-11 at Paterson Field in Montgomery.

Coosa Valley scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning in the first game to clinch the victory.

Steven Cryer and Jarrod Mims each had a two-run double in the inning for the Rebels.

Mims earned the win on the mound in relief for Coosa Valley.

Auston Wingard led the Chargers at the plate in the opener with his three-run homer in the top of the first inning.

Austin Davis took the loss on the mound for Cornerstone Christian after giving up six runs, including five earned runs, on six hits in 2 2/3 innings.

Mims led Coosa Valley with a three-run homer in the second game of the doubleheader to lead the Rebels to a 12-1 victory. Hunter Roe finished with a solo home run in the game.

Daniel Kennedy earned the win on the mound after striking out seven batters and giving up just three hits in a complete game.
