Kingwood graduate earns honors at BSC

Brooks Webb of Alabaster was named Editor of the Year by Birmingham-Southern College for the second straight year May 5 for his work with the student newspaper, The Hilltop News.

Webb has served as sports editor for the past two years at ‘Southern, after being named Staff Writer of the Year in 2009. He has also spent the past two years as President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, where he helped draft a new constitution for the organization, as well as organize numerous charity events.

Webb was also a relief pitcher for the Birmingham-Southern College baseball team, which finished 30-9 and won its straight SCAC Eastern Championship in 2011. He finished his career with a 1.95 earned run average and opponent’s hit just .192 against him, while his senior class won a total of 112 games and finished sixth in the NCAA Top 25 in 2010 and ninth in 2011 despite being unable to compete in the postseason due to NCAA reclassification.

Off the field, Webb was a member of the SCAC Conference Academic Honor Roll, volunteered his time with the American Baseball Foundation serving as a tutor, was a radio play by play analyst for UAB Baseball on the Blazer Sports Network, was the online play by play radio voice of BSC Panther Basketball and also served as a BSC Sports Information Department assistant, where he launched a video player that featured interviews with coaches and athletes, while assisting with writing season recaps, previews and feature stories.On May 14th, he will be graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting, with a minor in Business Administration.

Webb prepped at Kingwood Christian School, where he was a two-sport standout in baseball and boys’ basketball for the Lions during his career.
