Opal Outlaw Corn


Opal Outlaw Corn, age 92, died Monday, June 27, 2011 in Montevallo. She was born Sept. 6, 1918 in McKinnon, Tenn., and was raised in Birmingham where she attended Central Park Elementary and Ensley High School. A gifted athlete, she rejected a scholarship to Alabama School for Women (University of Montevallo) in order to marry her husband of 66 years, Ervin B. Corn.

Mrs. Corn was a member of Montevallo First Baptist Church and a former member of Central Park Baptist Church where she worked with children in daycare ministry for many years. She was active in her church’s Silver Club and at the Montevallo Senior Center until recently when her health declined.

She was a gifted seamstress, refinisher of antique furniture, harmonica player and a friend to many people of all ages. She loved adventure, travel, camping, playing with her great-grandchildren and visiting her family.

Mrs. Corn was preceded in death by her husband, Ervin Corn; her son, Larry Corn; and her grandson, Scott George. She is survived by son, George Davis Corn (Arlene) of Jemison and daughter, Denise Corn George (Roddy) of Montevallo. Other survivors include grandchildren, Larry Corn (Karla) of Porter Ranch, Calif., Tommy Corn (Shannon) of Clanton, Sonia Newton (Kirk) of Acworth, Ga., Dave Corn (Rachel) of Wilsonville, Jennifer Freeman of Calera, Sharon Morin (David) of Chelsea, Britney Morin of Jemison, Nathan George (Trisha) of Peachtree City, Ga., Laura Elgin (Gary) of Hoover, Lee George (Deah) of Montevallo; 24 great-grandchildren; and five great, great grandchildren.

Visitation will be at Southern Heritage Funeral Home, Pelham, on Thursday, June 30, at 9 a.m. followed by a memorial service at 10 a.m. Dr. Gregory George of Panama City Beach, Fla. And Dr. Terry Sutton of Montevallo will officiate.
