Montevallo women’s soccer picked to finish seventh in conference

The University of Montevallo women’s soccer team was voted to finish seventh in the Peach Belt Conference standings this season, according to league coaches in a poll released Aug. 25.
The Falcons, who were selected to finish sixth in the conference last season, went on to have a 6-11-2 season and finished tied for sixth overall in the Peach Belt Conference with a 4-5-1 record.
The Falcons have high hopes for the 2011 season with 12 new faces on the squad, who will all look to contribute. Montevallo returns 14 players from last season’s squad, including second team All-Conference performers Asgerdur Palsdottir and Christine Prince.
Montevallo returns all of its goal scorers from last season and both of its goalkeepers. The Falcons added depth to every position on the field and will see some fresh faces in the starting lineup this season.
Armstrong Atlantic came in first in the poll, receiving five first-place votes and five second-place votes. Columbus State came in at a close second with four first-place votes, five second-place votes and one third-place vote.
Rounding out the top five were North Georgia, UNC-Pembroke and Lander. Georgia College came in at sixth while Montevallo placed seventh. Clayton State and Flagler were tied for eighth, while USC-Aiken and Georgia Southwestern closed out the rankings at No. 10 and No. 11, respectively.
Montevallo opens the regular season on Sept. 2 at 3 p.m. on the road at Tusculum College.
