Warriors drop opener against Mustangs

The Stanhope Elmore High School football team outscored visiting Thompson 43-26 on the road Aug. 26 in Millbrook.

The Mustangs got on the scoreboard first with a 13-yard interception return for a touchdown by Montavious Smoke with 11:45 left in the first quarter to go up 6-0.

Thompson answered with a 52-yard touchdown pass from Trey Matherson to Avery Hale. The extra point was good for a 7-6 lead at the 11:33 mark of the first quarter. Thompson extended its lead to 10-6 on a 32-yard Matt Nall field goal.

Stanhope reclaimed the lead for good when Kenterrius Tyree scored on a 27-yard run with 5:28 to go in the first quarter. The point after was good, pushing the Mustangs ahead 13-0.

C.J. Davis scored twice for the Mustangs in the second quarter, on an 18-yard run and a 1-yard run.

Jatori Graves blocked a Thompson punt and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown for another Mustangs score.

Thompson answered before halftime with a 4-yard touchdown pass from Matherson to Dillon Holsombeck. A two-point conversion was good, but Stanhope took a 33-10 lead into halftime.

The Mustangs scored twice more in the third quarter. Dalton VanCor kicked a 24-yard field goal and Fred Harris took the ball into the end zone on a two-yard run.

Thompson got on the scoreboard a final time on a 2-yard run by Dee Tolbert, who also carried it in for a two-point conversion.
