Falcons finish eight in rain-shortened tournament

The University of Montevallo women’s golf team finished eighth at the Chris Banister Gamecock Classic tournament Sept. 5 in Huntsville.

Montevallo was led by junior Kaylee Hale, who finished tied for 36th with a score of 84.

The tournament was scheduled to be played on Monday and Tuesday. Due to Tropical Storm Lee, the event was cut to just one round, which was played it rain-soaked conditions. The field consisted of seven Division I teams and Montevallo.

Freshmen Megan Clyne and Ashlee Beck finished second and third for the Falcons. Clyne finished tied for 38th overall with a score of 85, while Beck was one stroke back and tied for 40th overall with an 86.

Senior Emma Breen finished 45th overall with a score of 89. The final Montevallo golfer was sophomore Kira Chaudrey, a Shelby County High School graduate who shot a 93 and finished 47th overall.

Montevallo finished 12 strokes behind seventh-place finisher Austin Peay State University. Samford University won the event with a team score of 294, while host Jacksonville State University finished second with a 302.

The Falcons will return to action Sept. 12-13 at the Smoky Mountain Intercollegiate in Sevierville, Tenn.
